The new STAAR Visian ICL is a posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens. It is an Implantable Collamer Lens, that is similar to having a contact lens placed into the eye.  The FDA approved this technology in December of 2005 and Dr. Weisenthal started implanting the lenses shortly thereafter.

The lens implant in designed to treat nearsighted patients with corrections between -3 and -15 diopters, and can partially correct nearsightedness up to -20 diopters.  It can be implanted in patients that have astigmatism up to 2.5 diopters.  There will be toric lens implant for patients with a higher amount of astigmatism in the future.

The VIsian ICL is designed to treat patients that do not qualify for refractive surgery with excimer laser.  These patients may be someone who does not fall within the parameters of treatment because of their prescription or those patients who have a thinner amount of cornea, making the removal of more tissue unsafe.  The procedure of implanting the lens does not touch or remove any cornea, therefore Dr. Weisenthal is able to treat a wide range of patients.
